Brooklyn, New York resident Barry Baldwin spent more than three decades as a bus driver for the New York City Transit Authority. During his long career, Barry Baldwin earned a reputation for safe and driving and excellent service. In 2005, he was honored with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) award for his commitment to ensuring the welfare and safety of passengers with disabilities.

Under the ADA, all forms of publicly-funded transit systems are required to be accessible to people with disabilities. Transit authorities can meet these requirements by acquiring new or used vehicles that are handicap-accessible.

All individuals with disabilities, including those using wheelchairs, must be able to board the bus using a ramp or lift. This mechanism must always be in working order. If meeting this criterion is cost-prohibitive, transit authorities should offer paratransit services that follow the same routes as the public bus. Seats at the front of the bus must also be clearly designated as priority seating for passengers with disabilities.
